A song that reminds you of your "first love"

"O love that will not let me go" as sung by Sandra McCracken and Derek Webb
"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.  Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.  Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.  This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.  Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another...We love because He first loved us." 1 John 4:7-11, 19
As a Christian, my first love is Jesus.  He loved me before anyone else did, before anything else...before the foundations were laid, He knew me and loved me.  Pretty mind-boggling, really.
I don't always live as if Jesus is my first love, though.  He often gets pushed to the back of my mind by the mundane details of life.  But He is the first and last love.
This song really speaks to that. Here are the lyrics:

O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

O light that followest all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.

O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

It also has special significance because it was the recessional song at our wedding.  It ties together the love Allen and I share with each other and the love that we both share for God.

  1. Hi Mrs. C! It's so fun to see that you have a blog! I love the idea of the song challenge, and I agree that the classrooms look so different!
    Have fun on your trip, and have a great summer!
